In 2021, I embarked on a life-changing journey to get fit, aiming to participate in a sprint triathlon at Windermere Lake. The thought of competing in this thrilling event both excited and terrified me. However, with the support of my friend Lee and the determination to challenge myself, I took the plunge into training for the triathlon. This blog shares my trials, triumphs, and how conquering my fear of open water swimming set me on a path to pursue more incredible triathlon experiences.
The First Step: Road Bike and Pool Sessions
As I committed to my fitness journey, I purchased a road bike from a friend and started cycling, reminiscing about my enjoyable cycling experiences during my time in Spain. While my love for biking ignited my enthusiasm, I knew that I had a long way to go, as I was still overweight. But I saw this as an opportunity to work on my fitness and transform myself.
Swimming Struggles and Support
The next part of my triathlon training involved swimming, and that’s where I encountered a significant challenge. Swimming in the pool with my friend Lee, who was also participating in the triathlon, exposed my weak technique. With only six weeks to train before the event, I knew I needed to focus on improving my swimming skills.
The Open Water Dilemma
Open water swimming was an entirely different ballgame, and the fear of it loomed over me. The day before the race, my friends and I relaxed in a log cabin, and my concerns about the swim were evident. Lee encouraged me to swim to a nearby buoy to gauge my abilities, but as I swam out, I felt breathless and struggled to reach the buoy. Thankfully, I had the wisdom to bring a float for safety. Although I didn’t manage the full distance, my friends cheered me on, and their support was heartwarming.
Race Day Jitters and Triumph
On the day of the triathlon, a mix of nerves and excitement filled the air. The swim was the first segment, and despite my fears, I dived in. Surprisingly, the actual swim was much shorter than the distance I had struggled with the day before. It boosted my confidence, and I emerged from the water in 4th position. As the race progressed, I found my rhythm and completed the triathlon with a sense of accomplishment, finishing 5th overall. The joy and satisfaction I felt at that moment were indescribable. I knew that I had discovered something special within me, and I wanted to pursue it further.
Setting the Bar Higher: The Half Ironman
That evening, fueled by the exhilaration of my achievement, I shared my aspirations with my friends. I announced my intention to participate in a half ironman the following year. While some laughed, their doubt only fueled my determination to prove them wrong.
A Journey of Triathlon Achievements
Since that eventful day, my journey in triathlon has been filled with challenges and triumphs. I’ve pushed my limits, embraced my fears, and grown as an athlete and an individual. Each triathlon I completed only fueled my passion for the sport, and I realized that with dedication and perseverance, I could achieve anything I set my mind to.
Conclusion
My journey from a beginner triathlete, afraid of open water, to a seasoned competitor in various triathlons has been a transformative experience. It taught me the importance of self-belief, the power of support from friends, and the rewards of stepping out of my comfort zone. As I continue to set new goals and embrace the journey, I hope my story inspires others to face their fears, challenge themselves, and discover the incredible possibilities that lie beyond their doubts. Triathlon has not only shaped my fitness but also my mindset, making me realize that anything is possible when you have the courage to take the first step. So, to all aspiring triathletes out there, I say, embrace the journey, relish the challenges, and conquer your goals – the thrill of triathlon triumph awaits you!
